Current Context: Indian Railways has decided to accomplish its mission of ‘Green Railway’ by 2030.
Indian Railway’s Mission ‘Green Railway’
  • Under this mission, Indian railways have decided to achieve net-zero carbon emission.
  • The mission aims to electrify its railways, improve energy efficiency of locomotives and trains by 2030.
  • Also, the ministry of railways, under this mission has set a target to achieve green certification for its railway stations, to build bio-toilets in the coaches and switching to a renewable source of energy.
  • Already under this mission, Indian Railways has completed electrification of more than 40,000 Route km (RKM) (63 per cent of Broad Gauge routes) in which 18,605 km electrification work has been done during 2014-20.
  • For the current year, Indian Railways has fixed a target of electrification of 7000 RKM. They have decided to electrify all routes on board gauge (BG) network by 2023.
