Current Context: Ministry of MSME has launched a programme to uplift the artisans who manufacture Agarbatti.
- The programme is launched under ‘Gramodyog Vikas Yojana’. The program will help to uplift and develop village industries.
- Total 5 pilot projects will be conducted under this programme, in which initially 4 pilot projects will be started and later the one remaining pilot project will be conducted.
- Each target group of artisans will be provided with 50 automatic agarbatti making machinery and tools along with 10 mixing machines. A total number of 200 automatic agarbatti making machines and 40 mixing machines will be distributed.
- The program will also develop 500 job opportunities in the agarbatti making sector and will lead to reduction in imports of agarbatti.
- Along with the formation of pilot projects, GOI has also taken decisions like: Placing the ‘Agarbatti’ item from “Free” trade to “Restricted” trade in the import policy and enhancing the import duty from 10% to 25% on round bamboo sticks used to manufacture agarbatti.
