Current Context: Submarine Cable Connectivity to Andaman & Nicobar Islands (CANI) has been launched via video conference by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
- This submarine Optical Fibre Cable (OFC) will provide a connectivity for Chennai, Tamil Nadu and Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Island.
- The CANI will connect island to the mainland. It will help to provide faster and seamless mobile and landline connection to Andaman and Nicobar island.
- The costing for Submarine OFC cable is about Rs 1224 crore.
- This project of connecting a distance of 2312 km between Chennai and Andaman and Nicobar Island was laid by PM Narendra Modi o 30th Dec 2018.
- The CANI will led to ease of business and maritime logistics support to the island.
- It will be offering 2x200 gigabits per second of bandwidth between Port Blair and Chennai and 2x100 gigabits per second of bandwidth between Port Blair and other islands.
- The project was funded by GOI through the USOF (Universal Service Obligation Fund), which comes under Department of Telecommunication, Ministry of Communication.
- The project was executed under the guidance of BSNL and technical guidance was provided by TCIL (Telecommunications Consultants India Ltd).
