Epidemic Diseases (Amendment) Bill 2020 passed in Rajya Sabha

The Epidemic Diseases (Amendment) Bill, 2020 is passed in Rajya Sabha. The bill was introduced by the Union Health and Family Welfare Minister, Dr Harsh Vardhan. 
  • The bill amends the Epidemic Diseases Act 1897
  • The bill includes protection rights for healthcare workers who are doing their jobs in combating epidemics
  • The bill also includes an extension of powers for the central government so that they can take required action and frame rules to limit the spread of the pandemic in their respective states
  • The one who harms the health care workers will be given imprison punishment for 3 months to 5 years along with fine amount between Rs 50,000 to 2 lakhs.
  • The bill provides safety rights to health care workers including, public and clinical health care providers like doctors, nurses, people who take initiative to work to combat the epidemic, or any person or group designated by the state government to work to combat the epidemic
  • The bill states ‘act of violence’ performed against health care workers like harassment at their workplaces, harm to their personal and professional equipment, harm or injury or danger to their lives, loss or damage to their property or not obeying their suggestions.
  • Complaint cases registered under this will be investigated within 30 days by police officers
