Current Context: Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) and e-Gopala Application.
- Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana: The PMSSY is launched with an aim to achieve sustainable development goals for fisheries in India. The funds allotted under this scheme is Rs 20,050 crore. The scheme will be implemented between 2020-21 and 2024-25.
- Aim of PMMSY: (a) To double the income of fish farmers (b) To boost fish production to 70 lakhs tonnes by 2024-25 (c) To reduce post-harvest losses of the fish sector (d) To increase employment opportunities in the fisheries sector (e) To establish finfish hatcheries, construct biofloc ponds, to build ornamental fish culture units, ice plants and fish feeding plants etc.
- e-Gopala Application: The app is the digital platform which launched with an aim to achieve breed improvement marketplace. The app will act as an information portal for the direct use of fish farmers. The app will provide information related to buying and selling of disease-free germplasm and will provide availability of quality breeding services like veterinary first aid, artificial insemination and vaccines. Alerts on various government schemes will also be provided via this app.
