Current Context: India and Nigeria held the bilateral meeting in a virtual mode in order to strengthen their relations to achieve mutual benefits for both the countries.
- India was represented by Union External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Nigeria was represented by country’s foreign minister Geoffrey Onyeama.
- The dignitaries discussed to deepen their relations in the sector of politics, economics, trade, defence and security with cultural cooperation.
- They assured to achieve the cooperation in defence training, capacity building, support in defence equipment, medical and health services, R&D in the defence sector and to exchange of information on a regular basis.
- They also discussed the sharing of information taking place between Indian and Nigerian Navies in order to enhance security in the maritime sector in the Gulf of Guinea region. They also assured to work together for current efforts to counter-terrorism, insurgency and piracy.
- Also, Nigeria’s foreign minister appreciated India support in combating COVID-19 in Nigeria. In July 2020, India offered financial support of USD 50 million and essential medicines to combat COVID-19 in Nigeria.
