SERB-POWER Initiative of DST

Current Context: The Union Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Harsh Vardhan launched the initiative called SERB-Power.

• The significance of SERB-POWER is (Science and Engineering and Research Board-Promoting Opportunities for Women in Exploratory Research). 
• The initiative is of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India. SERB is the statutory body of the DST. 
• The SERB-POWER is framed exclusively for women scientists with an aim to encourage emerging women scientist so that they get motivated to undertake R&D activities in various scientific and engineering areas.
• The initiative has two components of fellowship and research grants. Both components will serve as a benchmark of recognition in the national scenario. 
• The initiative will empower women scientists, will cultivate a women-friendly culture and will ensure more women in leadership positions in decision-making bodies.
• To apply for this initiative, women researchers must belong to the age group of 35-55 years. 
• The SERB-POWER supports in the form of: (a) Fellowship of Rs. 15,000 per month in addition to regular income (b) Research grant of Rs. 10 lakh per annum (c) Overhead of Rs 90,000 per annum
• The duration of SERB-POWER initiative is 3 years and can be availed once in a year by the women researchers.
