Current Context: The first Production unit of Varunastra which is the Heavy Weight Torpedo (HWT) was delivered to the Indian Navy.

  • The announcement for the same was made by Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL). 
  • The Varunastra is developed by the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL) of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). 
  • For the mass production of Varunastra, the Defence Ministry had awarded a contract of Rs 1,187 crore. 
  • The Varunastra is a ship-launched, heavyweight, electrically-propelled anti-submarine torpedo. 
  • It has the capability to target quiet submarines and can be fired from all ASW ships capable of firing heavyweight torpedoes.
  • Its operational range is 40 km and the maximum depth is 400 metres. 
  • It is known to be the only torpedo in the world to have a GPS-based locating aid.
