- The announcement for the same was made by Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL).
- The Varunastra is developed by the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL) of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
- For the mass production of Varunastra, the Defence Ministry had awarded a contract of Rs 1,187 crore.
- The Varunastra is a ship-launched, heavyweight, electrically-propelled anti-submarine torpedo.
- It has the capability to target quiet submarines and can be fired from all ASW ships capable of firing heavyweight torpedoes.
- Its operational range is 40 km and the maximum depth is 400 metres.
- It is known to be the only torpedo in the world to have a GPS-based locating aid.
