Varunastra: The heavy weight torpedo delivered to Indian Navy

Current Context: The first Production unit of Varunastra which is the Heavy Weight Torpedo (HWT) was delivered to the Indian Navy.

The announcement for the same was made by Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL).
The Varunastra is developed by the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL) of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
For the mass production of Varunastra, the Defence Ministry had awarded a contract of Rs 1,187 crore.
The Varunastra is a ship-launched, heavyweight, electrically-propelled anti-submarine torpedo.
It has the capability to target quiet submarines and can be fired from all ASW ships capable of firing heavyweight torpedoes.
Its operational range is 40 km and the maximum depth is 400 metres.
It is known to be the only torpedo in the world to have a GPS-based locating aid.
