Current Context: The World Bank, Government of India and Government of West Bengal have entered into a loan agreement to improve waterways in West Bengal.

  • For this purpose, a loan agreement of $105 million was signed. 
  • This funds will be utilized to upgrade inland water transport infrastructure, logistics and special development project in Kolkata.
  • The loan is having a maturity of 17 years including the grace period of 7 years.
  • The up-gradation in Waterways will facilitate freight and passenger Movement in the Hooghly River.
  • The funds will also be used to improve accessibility in Kolkata Metropolitan Area which will improve logistics in the state.

    • Folk Dances of WB: Gambhira Dance, Kathi dance, The Baul dance, Domni, Dhunachi
    • Thermal Power Plant in WB: Farakka Super Thermal Power Plant, Durgapur Steel Thermal Power Station
