Current Context: India commenced its BRICS Chairmanship with an inaugural of Sherpas meeting.
India held Sherpas' Meeting
  • India succeeds Russia to hold the Chairmanship of BRICS.
  • The Sherpas meeting was chaired by Sanjay Bhattacharya, Secretary of Consular Passport and Visa (CPV) and Overseas Indian Affairs (OIA).
  • The meeting also observed the participation of P Harish, Additional Secretary of Economic Relations as India’s BRICS Sherpa and Sous Sherpa.
  • The meeting was held to focus on Culture and boost people-to-people engagement.
  • During the meeting, India announced its priorities while handling the chairmanship for 2021.
  • The priorities framed by India are: Reform of the Multilateral System, Counter-Terrorism cooperation, Using Digital and Technological Solutions for attaining SDGs and Enhancing People to People exchanges.
  • India also announced its theme for being chaired for BRICS. The theme is ‘BRICS@15: Intra BRICS Cooperation for Continuity, Consolidation and Consensus’.
  • India presented various presentations in the areas like: Counterterrorism cooperation, agriculture, tackling pandemic COVID-19, innovation, digital health.
