Current Context: Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ released the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) 2019-20 report.
Education Minister Released AISHE 2019-20 Report
  • The report is annually released by the Department of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education. The report highlights key performance indicators for the current status of higher education in India.
  • The AISHE 2019-20 report is the 10th edition.
  • The report describes that, from the last 5 years i.e. 2015-16 to 2019-20, the enrolment of the students has increased by 11.4%.
  • The enrolment of female students to pursue higher education has increased by 18.2%.
  • The total enrolment for higher education was at 3.85 crores in 2019-20. Of the total, 49% constitutes female enrolments. Uttar Pradesh has topped for the highest enrolment by students. The second and third positions are marked by Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu respectively.
  • The Gross Enrolment Ratio for 2019-20 was at 27.1%.
  • The Gender Parity Index (GPI) was at 1.01 in 2019-20. The index reveals improvement in the relative access to higher education for females of eligible age group compared to males.
  • The Pupil- Teacher Ratio in Higher Education was 26:1 in 2019-20. PTR is the number of students who attended school or university to the number of teachers in the institution.
  • Around, 3.38 crore students enrolled for UG and PG level educational programmes. Also, 2.03 lakh students pursued PhD in 2019-20.
  • The all India average College density was at 30. It indicates the number of colleges per lakh eligible population.
