Current Context: The Indian Navy will receive the three MH-60 ‘Romeo’ multi-role helicopters from the United States (US) in July 2021.

  • These three MH-60 ‘Romeo’ multi-role helicopters are part of the first set of 24 such multi-role helicopters.
  • In Feb 2020, India and the US had signed a pact worth $2.4 billion to buy 24 MH-60 Romeo helicopters from Lockheed Martin.
  • The MH-60 Romeo helicopters are equipped with multi-mode radars and night vision devices. They are armed with Hellfire missiles, torpedoes, and precision-guided weaponry.
  • These helicopters can be operated from cruisers, aircraft carriers destroyers, and frigates. They can target submarines, ships and can be part of rescue operations at sea.
  • The MH-60 Romeo helicopters are said to replace Sea Kings.
