Current Context: The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed a contract with Mahindra Telephonics Integrated Systems Limited, Mumbai.

  • The contract was signed to procure 11 Airport Surveillance Radars with Monopulse Secondary Surveillance Radar for the Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard.
  • The MoD will perform the procurement activity under the Buy and Make category with the cost of Rs 323 crore.
  • The contract will also help to satisfy the goal under Atma Nirbhar Bharat Abhiyan.
  • The Airport Surveillance Radars will enhance the safety and efficiency in flying operations of the Indian Navy and the Indian Coast Guard.
  • These radars will raise air domain awareness.
  • Airport Surveillance Radars with Monopulse Secondary Surveillance Radar will be more accurate as compared to the conventional ones especially when several aircraft are in close proximity in a specific area of airspace.
  • This will also enhance employment opportunities and skill development.
