Current Context: The third edition of the Performance of Grading Index (PGI) for 2019-20 was released by the Department of School Education and Literacy of the Ministry of Education.
Performance Grading Index (PGI) 2019-20
  • As per the grading index ranks, the states of Punjab, Chandigarh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andaman and Nicobar has attained the highest grade (Grade I ++) for 2019-20.
  • The score for the top-performing states/UT are: Punjab (929), Chandigarh (912), Tamil Nadu (906), Kerala (901), Andaman and Nicobar (901).
  • The index analyses the performance made by states and UTs in the school education sector. By using 70 indicators, the ranking for every state was given.
  • The indicators were divided into 5 parameters like access; governance and management; infrastructure; equity and learning outcomes.
  • The grading system has 10 levels. Level 1 indicates top-notch performer with a score level in the range of 951 to 1000 points. Level II, also known as Grade 1++, indicates a score between 901 and 950. Those with Grade 1+ (or Level III) have scored between 851 and 900. The lowest is Grade VII, and it means a score between 0 and 550 points.
