Current Context: Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) entered into a contract with the Ministry of Defence to manufacture and supply Akash missiles to the Indian Air Force (IAF).

  • A contract worth Rs 499 crore was signed between the entities for the same.
  • The Union Cabinet had made an announcement to pass clearance of Akash Weapon System for Export, therefore the BDL is offering Akash for export to foreign countries.
  • The need for an external intermediary as it will directly process the pension.
  • Already, the BDL has received export leads from some countries to procure missiles.
  • BDL is the major company for projects under India's Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP). Akash is one of the missiles under IGMDP being manufactured by BDL for Indian Army and the Indian Air Force.
  • Akash is a medium-range mobile surface-to-air missile (SAM) system.
