Current Context: The Union Cabinet chaired by PM Narendra Modi approved the MoU between India and Russia to enhance cooperation on coking coal.

  • Coking coal is a key steelmaking raw material; also called Metallurgical coal, and for this many domestic entities are dependent on imports from selective groups of nations.
  • India’s 85% of coking coal demand is fulfilled through import.
  • Therefore the cooperation of India and Russia will help India to reduce this dependency on imports from other nations.
  • The MoU will also benefit India to reduce the per-tonne cost of steel production.
  • The MoU agreement was signed between the Ministry of Steel of India and the Ministry of Energy of Russia.
  • Thus the MoU will reduce the input cost and cost of steel and will promote equity and inclusiveness.
