- It is an automatic machine that looks similar to a bank ATM.
- It is installed under the UN’s ‘World Food Programme’.
- India’s first ‘Grain ATM’ is called an ‘Automated, Multi Commodity,Grain Dispensing Machine’.
- It is equipped with a biometric system with a touch screen, through which the beneficiary can enter the Aadhaar or ration card unique number. After authenticating the biometric details, the machine will automatically fill the bags installed under it with food grains prescribed by the government to the beneficiaries.
- It will help to save consumers from standing in long queues outside ration depots. It will reduce complaints like time consumption and right measurement of ration quantity, which used to be often made by beneficiaries previously.
- Thus the machine will ensure that the right quantity reaches the right beneficiary and will bring more transparency to the public food distribution system.
- The ‘Grain ATM’ can dispense up to 70 kg of grains within 5 to 7 minutes.
