- The MoU was signed to implement Prampragat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY) and Mission Organic Development Initiative (MODI) in UT Ladakh.
- This will help to convert the UT into organic by 2025.
- The MoU will allow UT to avail of the organic certification after a tie-up with the GOI.
- The UT has decided to get organic status through three phases. In the 1st phase, 85 villages will be recognized and 5000 hectares of land will be converted to organic in these villages. During the 2nd phase, 82 villages will be recognized and 1000 hectares of land will be converted to organic in these villages. And during the 3rd phase, 79 villages will be recognized and the remaining land will be converted to organic in these villages.
- Sikkim has become the 1st state to attain 100% organic status. The state has completely banned the usage of chemical fertilizers and pesticides in farms.
- Prampragat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY): It is the part of Soil Health Management Scheme which is executed under the National Mission of Sustainable Agriculture. The scheme aims to develop models for sustainable organic farming through the mixing of traditional methods and modern methods. This will help to maintain fertility of soil for long term.
