Current Context: The IIT Bombay has launched ‘Project Udaan’.
‘Project Udaan’—IIT Bombay
  • The ‘Project Udaan’ is a language translator which will make it easy for the students to understand educational content in their own language.
  • The project is a donation-based project and is an end-to-end ecosystem.
  • It will translate the scientific and technical content available in the English language to Hindi or other languages.
  • It is based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology and the AI-based software will translate the educational content in one-sixth of the time taken by a team of linguistic experts working manually on it.
  • The ‘Project Udaan’ is developed by Institute Chair Professor, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Prof. Ganesh Ramakrishnan along with his team from IIT Bombay.
  • The project fulfills the motto of the New Education Policy in which it is mentioned to impart higher education through Indian languages.
  • The goal of the project is to translate 500 engineering texts in Hindi in one year and in 15 Indian languages in 3 years.
  • It has also set the goal to develop a web platform that will have a translation workbench, domain-specific linguistic resources like dictionaries in order to have an efficient and consistent quality translation.
