Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission

Current Context: Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched ‘Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission’.

• It was launched from his parliamentary constituency Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh.
• The mission is the pan India mission which aims to strengthen the healthcare sector and infrastructure in India.
• The mission is in addition to the National Health Protection Mission (Ayushman Bharat Yojana).
• The funds of Rs 5,000-crore are sanctioned for the mission.
• The ‘Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission’ will work to eradicate the gaps in public health infrastructure and will bring critical care facilities.
• It will work to bring primary health care facilities to urban and rural parts of the country.
• The 17,788 rural health and wellness centers in 10 high focus states will be benefited from the mission.
• Under the mission, 11,024 urban health and wellness centers will be established in the urban areas.
• Also, a national institution for one health, four new national institutes for virology, a regional research platform for WHO South-East Asia Region, nine biosafety level-III laboratories, five new regional national centers for disease control will also be established.
• It will help to augment the screening of diseases as the infrastructure required to check and monitor diseases will be developed.
• The mission will also generate employment opportunities in rural and urban areas.
