- The index is drafted by NITI Aayog in consultation with twelve Line Ministries and in partnership with State governments, Oxford University’s Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI), and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
- The report is based on National Family Health Survey 4, which was conducted in 2015-16 by the International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS).
- It is based on 3 dimensions namely, Health, Education, and Standard of Living. These 3 dimensions are represented by 12 indicators.
- The states namely Bihar, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh are multidimensionally poor states.
- Bihar also has the highest number of malnourished people, followed by Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh respectively.
- Kerala, Goa, and Sikkim have the lowest percentage of the population are multidimensionally poor. These states have the lowest poverty.
- In terms of UTs, the Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, and Daman and Diu are the poorest UTs.
- In Puducherry, the proportion of poor is the lowest among the UTs and it is followed by Lakshadweep, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, and Delhi respectively.
