Current Context: India will soon introduce and issue e-passports, which will secure biometric information.
India will Introduce and Issue E-passports
  • The e-passports will be based on Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) and biometrics.
  • It will be as per the standards of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).
  • The announcement for the same was made by the Secretary of the Ministry of External Affairs, Sanjay Bhattacharya.
  • The passport jacket will have an electronic chip that will store important security-related data.
  • The personal details of the applicants will be digitally signed and will be embedded in the passport booklet.
  • If anyone, tampers with the chip, the system will identify it, resulting in the failure of the passport authentication.
  • To manufacture e-Passports, India Security Press, Nashik has awarded the contract for procurement of ICAO compliant electronic contactless inlays along with its operating system necessary for chip-enabled e-Passports.
