Current Context: India’s first innovation center for graphene will be developed in Kerala.
India’s 1st Innovation Centre for Graphene to be Setup in Kerala
  • It will be developed by Digital University Kerala (DUK) in partnership with the Centre for Materials for Electronics Technology (C-MET).
  • It will be set up in Thrissur, Kerala.
  • The funds of Rs 86.41 crore will be utilized for the same.
  • It will be India’s first graphene R&D incubation center.
  • The industrial partner will be Tata Steel Limited.
  • The approval for the same was granted by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
  • The centre will give chance to students, researchers, established industries, and budding startups to innovate and develop a thriving environment for innovative graphene-based product development.
  • Graphene is having extraordinary electrical and electronic properties and will help to replace indium and cut the cost of OLED (organic light-emitting diode) screens in smartphones. It possesses good chemical stability, high electrical conductivity, and a large surface area, it is transparent and lightweight.
