Current Context: The World Bank has approved a loan of USD 125 million to the West Bengal government.

  • The loan was approved to support financially towards social protection service access to the poor and vulnerable section of society in the state.
  • The loan was sanctioned under the ‘WB Building state capability for inclusive social protection’ operation.
  • This operation helps to enhance access to social assistance and target-based services to the poor and vulnerable section of society in the state.
  • Various services like medical help via telemedicine, support to elders and differently-abled people, digital payments support, and access to the various public services will be granted under the operation using the funds.
  • Around 400 programs will be executed by the state government under the operation.
