- The city has launched the first in a series of battery-powered electric boats.
- This is the new project undertaken by Kochi Metro Rail Ltd.
- It will be having an integrated water transport system with 15 identified routes.
- This will help to connect 10 islands that are situated along with the network of routes. The network is speeded with a span of 76 km which will be covered with a fleet of 78 fast, electrically powered hybrid ferries plying to 38 jetties.
- The boats are called ‘Water Metros’ which are having features like an aluminum catamaran, fully air-conditioned, wide windows.
- They are comprised of Lithium Titanate Oxide batteries which charge at a fast rate and serve for a long duration. Their charging time is 10-15 minutes.
- The price of each boat is Rs 7.30 cr.
- The total outlay of the project is Rs 819 crore which is supported by Indo-German Financial Corporation.
- The fund's worth Rs 579 crore are granted by Germany’s funding agency named KfW and funds of Rs 102 crore are granted by the Kerala government and land acquisition worth Rs 72 crore.
