Current Context: India has signed the Host Country Agreement (HCA) with International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
India signed HCA with ITU
  • The HCA was signed to set up an area office and innovation center of ITU in New Delhi.
  • It was signed during World Telecommunications Standardisation Assembly-20 (WTSA-20) held in Geneva, Switzerland.
  • It was signed between Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister of Communications, and H.E. Houlin Zhao, Secretary-General of ITU, in a virtual manner.
  • The government of India will fund the office.
  • It will be in operation by mid-2022.
  • The area office and innovation center of ITU in New Delhi will serve South Asian nations to implement ITU initiatives, grant technical assistance, frame policies on ICTs.
  • The innovation center will help to perform R&D in telecommunication technologies.
  • The signing of the HCA will lead to providing a legal and financial framework to establish an area office and innovation center.
