- Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the Government of Japan, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will jointly create new initiatives for accelerating climate action in 10 states and UTs in the country.
- The project will be implemented in Bihar, Delhi-NCR, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Odisha, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, and Uttar Pradesh during 2022-23.
- Japan as part of its global support to 23 countries through UNDP's 'Climate Promise - From Pledge to Impact' program will provide $5.6 million in climate grants to UNDP India for this project.
- India at the COP26 summit in Glasgow in November 2021 pledged to cut its total projected carbon emission by one billion tons by 2023, install 500GW of non-fossil energy capacity by 2030, reduce carbon intensity by less than 45 percent by the end of the decade, and to achieve net zero carbon emission by 2070.
- A joint initiative by UNDP-IMD will support Nationally Determined Contribution(NDCs) to achieve net-zero emissions and ensure climate-resilient development.
- UNDP and IMD will work together to promote climate resilience and will work with MNRE (Ministry of New and Renewable Energy) to promote climate mitigation.
