Walmart foundation and ICRISAT to launch a Secondary Processing Unit (SPU)

Current Context: Walmart Foundation and International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid-Tropics (ICRISAT) announced the launch of a Secondary Processing Unit (SPU) in Andhra Pradesh.

• The secondary Processing Unit was inaugurated by the Minister of Agriculture & Cooperation, Marketing, Food Processing of the Andhra Pradesh government Kakani Govardhan Reddy.
• This facility will support farmers with new livelihood and market access opportunities through value-added groundnut, millet, and other products.
• ICRISAT along with its project implementation partner Accion Fraterna Ecology Centre (AFEC) has been working to accelerate Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) and smallholder member farmers' benefits through interventions in agriculture value chain.
• Over 6000 smallholder farmers in the Anantapur district will benefit from this SPU. The facility is operated by the women-led Rythu Nestham Food Producer Company Ltd. (RNFPCL). The facility has a built-up area of 1,000 square meters.
• The facility will have five processing lines, which will produce millet and pulses-based ready-to-cook and ready-to-eat formulations such as traditional khichdi and upma mixes, cookies, snacks, and cold pressed groundnut oil.
