Current Context: The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) came together to launch the Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme (GEF-SGP).
Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme
  • The year 2022 marks the seventh operational phase of the GER-SGP in India.
  • Along with providing financial and technical support to environment-friendly projects, the programme will also enhance the lives of the local communities.
  • The primary objective of the programme is to study and work on climate change, biodiversity, and land degradation with the help of NGOs.
  • Tamil Nadu's Virudhunagar and Ramanathapuram have been chosen in the 7th phase as two districts representing the Indian coastal region.
  • The Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme (GEF-SGP) was launched in 1992 to achieve sustainable development by implementing the bottom-up approach, increasing youth participation, empowering civil community organizations, and vulnerable sections of society, viz. indigenous people, women, etc.
  • The GEF-SGP is implemented by the UNDP and the GEF Secretariat is in Washington DC.
