Current Context: The Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, launched indigenous production of AVGAS 100 LL in Ghaziabad, UP.
Indigenous AVGAS 100LL
  • The AVGAS 100 LL is a special aviation fuel meant for piston engine aircraft and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs).
  • The oil marketing company, Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) has been given the responsibility to produce and market AVGAS 100 LL in the country.
  • The IOCL will produce AVGAS 100 LL in its flagship refinery situated in Vadodara, Gujarat.
  • Currently, India imports AVGAS 100 LL from European nations and this initiative is set to reduce the import dependence on fuels, as envisioned in the Atma Nirbhar Bharat Abhiyan.
  • AVGAS 100 LL is the principal grade of Aviation Gasoline which is primarily used by defense forces and Flying Training Organizations (FTOs).
  • The fuel is of superior quality as it has a high octane number.
  • IOCL is a PSU under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and was established in 1959 with its headquarters in New Delhi. The current Chairperson of IOCL is Shrikant Madhav Vaidya.
