Current Context: The commissioning of India’s first Indigenous Aircraft Carrier (IAC-1) into the Navy as INS Vikrant was completed.

  • INS Vikrant is the first ever aircraft carrier to be indigenously designed and constructed by India which will strengthen India’s capability to operate over deep seas.
  • India has joined countries like the US, Russia, France, the UK, and China, who are capable of designing and constructing aircraft carriers.
  • With a 43,000-ton loading capacity, INS Vikrant is the seventh largest carrier in the world.
  • INS Vikrant was the oldest aircraft carrier which was officially laid down in 1943.
  • After its decommissioning in the 1990s, the plan for building an indigenous aircraft carrier was made.
