Current Context: In order to strengthen the safe migration of Indian citizens, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the United Nations International Organization for Migration (IOM- UN) and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

  • The primary objective of signing this MoU is to create an opportunity for these two organizations to collaborate on a series of initiatives related to the safe, orderly, and regular migration of Indian skilled professionals and youth around the world.
  • The IOM and CII will come together to provide dynamism to India’s migrant workforce that can meet the demands of the changing labor markets across the globe.
  • IOM is a UN agency responsible for providing services related to the migration of refugees, internally displaced persons, and migrant workers.
  • It was established in 1951 with its headquarters in Le Grand-Saconnex, Switzerland and the current Director General of the IOM is Antonio Vitorino.
  • CII is a non-government, not-for-profit, and industry-led organization that was established in 1895 with its headquarters in New Delhi. The current chairperson of the CII is Chandrajit Banerjee.
  • CII has also been driving for providing skill training in India and connecting them with the industries through the initiatives like the “Model Career Centres”, “Recruit-Train-Deploy”, and “Multi Skill Institutes”.
