Tribal Peace Agreement in Assam

Current Context: The Government of India (GoI), the Assam Government, and eight Tribal Groups of Assam signed a tripartite peace agreement in New Delhi.

  • To end the decade-old conflict between the tribal groups and tea garden workers in Assam, an agreement was signed between the GoI, the State Govt. of Assam, and 8 tribal groups.
  • Birsa Commando Force, All Adivasi National Liberation Army, Adivasi People’s Army, Adivasi Cobra Military of Assam, and Santhal Tiger Force were among the tribal groups that signed the agreement.
  • The objective behind signing the agreement is the upliftment of the tribal population along with the protection of their cultural, linguistic, and ethnic identities.
  • Upon the successful signing of the agreement, the Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that this was one more step towards making North East region extremism free by 2025.
  • He further iterated that several agreements viz. Bodo Accord, Karbi Anglong Agreement, etc., were signed in the North Eastern region to ensure peace and development.
