Current Context: Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) successfully tested the Inflatable Aerodynamic Decelerator (IAD).

  • The technology will be useful in landing payloads on Mars and Venus in the upcoming space missions.
  • The IAD was designed and developed by the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSCC) which is located in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.
  • It was successfully tested in a Rohini Sounding Rocket from the Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station (TERLS).
  • The Inflatable Aerodynamic Decelerator was folded and kept inside the payload before it inflated at an altitude of 84 kilometers and descended through the atmosphere.
  • ISRO is the national space agency of India which was established in 1969 with its headquarters in Bengaluru. It comes under the aegis of the Department of Space and is directly overseen by the Prime Minister of India. S. Somnath is the current chairperson of the ISRO.
