Current Context: Project Management Unit (PMU) was launched by the Minister of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare, Narendra Singh Tomar.

  • The PMU is a joint initiative of the Department of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare (DA&FW), under the Ministry of Agriculture and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI).
  • The objective of the PMU is to accelerate large Public Private Partnership (PPP) projects by integrating schemes and initiatives of the government with private sector investments.
  • This PPP initiative will enhance the income of small farmers by generating additional value, from the equipping of quality inputs, technology extension to both, forward and backward linkages, and value addition.
  • At the event, Tomar said that growth in the agricultural sector is vital for the overall growth of India, and empowerment of the agriculture sector can be achieved through public participation and government cooperation.
  • FICCI is a non-government, not-for-profit association of business organizations in India that was established in 1927 by Ghanshyam Das Birla. It has its headquarters in New Delhi. The current President of FICCI is Sanjiv Mehta.
