Current Context: The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) launched its Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission.

  • The DART Mission was launched with the objective to test the novel technology that changes the course of an asteroid heading towards the Earth.
  • It is the first Kinetic Impactor Method of planetary defense effort that involved a DART spacecraft colliding with the small moonlet called Dimorphos that orbits a larger asteroid named Didymos.
  • The DART Spacecraft successfully crashed into the target, i.e. Dimorphos and in a few weeks, the scientists at NASA will determine the overall impact of the mission.
  • DART is a low-cost spacecraft that weighs around 600 kg and uses hydrazine propellant for maneuvering the spacecraft.
  • The spacecraft is also equipped with a high-resolution imager called Didymos Reconnaissance and Asteroid Camera for Optical Navigation (DRACO).
