Current Context: The Cabinet, chaired by PM Narendra Modi, approved the implementation of the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme on the “National Programme on High-Efficiency Solar PV Modules”.

  • The objective of this Rs.19,500 crore scheme is to achieve a manufacturing capacity of Giga Watt (GW) scale in High-Efficiency Solar PV Modules.
  • The scheme aims to build an ecosystem for manufacturing high-efficiency solar Photo Voltaic modules in India that will reduce India’s import dependence and will further strengthen the Atma Nirbhar Bharat initiative.
  • After the selection of manufacturers through a transparent process, the incentives on sales under PLI will be disbursed for 5 years post commissioning of solar PV manufacturing plants.
  • The scheme is expected to achieve a manufacturing capacity of 65,000 MW per year and will bring a direct investment of Rs. 94,000 crores.
  • The program is also expected to provide direct employment to 1,95,000 and indirect employment to 7,80,000 people.
  • A massive Rs. 1.37 lakh crore import substitution is expected to be realized if the program is implemented successfully.
