Current Context: Minister of Education, Dharmendra Pradhan, inaugurated Ramakrishna Mission’s ‘Awakening ’ Programme for students of classes I to V.
Ramakrishna Mission’s ‘Awakening ’ Programme
  • Mission's "Awakening" program is an initiative toward ensuring the overall personality development of children in line with the National Education Policy (NEP), 2020.
  • At the inaugural event, Pradhan said that NEP 2020 is deeply influenced by the philosophy of Swami Vivekananda, Sri Aurobindo, and Mahatma Gandhi and that these leaders envisioned an education system that is progressive and rooted in cultural values to take the nation forward.
  • The Education Minister also said Ramakrishna Mission’s initiative was a step towards ensuring holistic personality development of the children.
  • NEP 2020 was launched by the Ministry of Education to introduce several changes in the Indian education system from primary education to higher education.
  • Key changes include:
    1. The current 10+2 structure at the school level was changed to the 5+3+3+4 model starting from age 3.
    2. Multi-stream facility to be provided in which a student can choose subjects across streams.
    3. Mid-term dropouts are to be given grades with an option to complete their degree later.
    4. The common college entrance exam in India will be held twice a year.
