Current Context: The Competition Commission of India (CCI) imposed a penalty on tech-giant Google for abusing its dominance in the mobile device ecosystem of Android.
CCI Imposes Penalty on Google
  • The CCI in its investigation found that Google abused its assertive positions to protect its applications viz. YouTube and Chrome in mobile web browsers and online video hosting.
  • It found out that Google used its powerful stature to mandate Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to pre-install its entire Google Mobile Suite like YouTube, Chrome, Maps, Search, Google Play store, etc. on mobile phones and place them in eminent positions.
  • The CCI imposed a fine of Rs. 1,337.76 crores on Google in accordance with Section 4(2)(a)(i) of the Competition Act, 2002.
  • Apart from this, the CCI also ordered Google to allow uninstalling of pre-installed apps by users.
  • The CCI is a statutory body under the Ministry of Corporate Affairs that was established in 2003 as the chief competition regulator of the country. Its headquarters is in New Delhi. The current Chairperson of the CCI is Ashok Kumar Gupta.
