  • At a three-day long “Digital India Conference of State IT Ministers”, the Union Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw approved Rs 26,000 crores for the installation of 25,000 mobile towers in 500 days. The project will be implemented by Bharat Broadband Network.
  • Union Home & Cooperation Minister Amit Shah announced a Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to Pahari Community in Jammu and Kashmir. Earlier, Paharis were considered a part of the OBC community.
  • A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and the Central Financial institution of Oman to launch the Rupay Debit Card in Oman.
  • UNESCO released a list of 50 exclusive and iconic heritage textile crafts of India under Safeguarding Traditional Indian Textiles.
  • Aditya Birla Health Insurance Co. Limited (ABHICL) launched the “Active Fit” initiative, which is a comprehensive health insurance plan for young and healthy adults. The plan will cover day-care treatments, pre-hospitalization, and post-hospitalization along with maternity benefits as well.

  • In order to give a boost to the country’s efforts to become a world cloud computing hub, Google announced setting up its first cloud region in Greece. As a part of the deal, Google is expected to inject USD 2.13 billion into the country.
  • Appointments:
    • The Election Commission of India (ECI) declared actor Pankaj Tripathi as the “National Icon” of ECI for creating awareness amongst voters.
    • Sandeep Kumar Gupta was appointed as the Chairperson and Managing Director of GAIL (India) Limited. SK Gupta will replace Manoj Jain.
    • Sanjeev Kishore was appointed as the Director General of the Indian Ordinance Factory. Kishore is the 1985-batch officer of the Indian Ordnance Factory Service (IOFS).
  • Awards and Recognitions:
    • Carolyn R. Bertozzi, Morten Meldal, and K. Barry Sharpless were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2022 “for the development of click chemistry and bioorthogonal chemistry”.
    • French author Annie Ernaux was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for 2022 “for the courage and clinical acuity with which she uncovers the roots, estrangements and collective restraints of personal memory”.
    • Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel won the prestigious Nansen Award from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for her “leadership, courage, and compassion” during the Syrian crisis.
  • Important Days:
    • Every year, October 05 is observed as World Teachers’ Day around the world. It is an initiative of UNESCO. The theme of World Teachers’ Day 2022 is, “The Transformation of Education Begins with Teachers”.
  • Sports:
    • Indian Men’s Hockey Goalkeeper, PR Sreejesh and Indian Women’s Hockey Goalkeeper, Savita Punia respectively won the FIH Men’s and Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year for the second year in a row.
    • Saudi Arabia won the bid unopposed to host the 2029 Asian Winter Games at a planned Mountain Resort in the Gulf Arab State.
