India’s First Indigenous Overhauser Magnetometer

October 29, 2022
Current Context: The Indian Institute of Geomagnetism (IIG) scientists developed an indigenous Overhauser (OVH) Magnetometer.
India’s First Indigenous Overhauser Magnetometer
  • It is the first indigenously developed OVH Magnetometer of India that is developed by the scientists at the IIG, an autonomous research institution under the Department of Science & Technology (DST), GOI.
  • According to the Ministry of Science & Technology, the indigenous OVH Magnetometer will reduce the cost of sampling.
  • The OVH Magnetometers are extensively used in magnetic observatories (MO) and are known for their higher:
  1. accuracy
  2. sensitivity
  3. energy consumption
  • The OVH Magnetometer was installed at Alibag Magnetic Observatory and will be used for performing geomagnetic field measurements.
  • The sensors at Alibag MO accurately reproduced the geomagnetic diurnal variations and precisely showed the signatures of space weather events such as geomagnetic storms.
