MHA Cancels License of RGF and RGCT

Current Context: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) canceled the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) license of the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation (RGF) and Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust (RGCT), for alleged violations of the law.
MHA Cancels License of RGF and RGCT
  • The FCRA license of the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation (RGF) and Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust (RGCT) was revoked after investigations carried out by an inter-ministerial committee, formed in 2020 by the MHA.
  • The committee investigated the funds received by RGF and RGCT in relation to the suspected violation of the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA), the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), and the Income Tax Act.
  • The head of the committee was a special director from Enforcement Directorate (ED), along with members from the Income Tax Department; MHA; CIT; the Ministry of Finance; and the Ministry of Urban Development.
  • RGF and RGCT are both headed by Sonia Gandhi and have Rahul Gandhi, Dr. Manmohan Singh, P Chidambaram, etc. as members.
  • FCRA was enacted in 1976 under the Ministry of Home Affairs to regulate foreign donations in India and every NGO that wishes to receive foreign funding must register itself under this Act.
