Current Context: In order to ensure the mental well-being of elderly people, NIMHANS and HelpAge India will jointly implement the Sarthak initiative.
NIMHANS and HelpAge India’s “Sarthak”
  • Sarthak is a community-based initiative that provides training to healthcare workers, nurses, and volunteers on geriatric mental health.
  • Under this initiative, around 10,000 mental-health workers and volunteers will be trained to identify and counter issues related to mental health, faced by old age people.
  • Sarthak will provide training on a category basis:
  1. Non-Specialist Health Workforce
  2. Informal Caregivers
  3. Institutional Caregivers
  • The National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro-Sciences (NIMHANS) is an educational institution that deals with issues related to mental health. It was established in 1974 in Bengaluru, Karnataka.
  • HelpAge India is an NGO that deals with issues of older people and was established in 1978. The current Chairperson of HelpAge India is Kiran Karnik.
