Current Context: In the plan to become Net Zero Carbon Emitter by 2030, Indian Railways has adopted an integrated approach to a Green environment.

  • The government of India has set a target of 33% emissions intensity reduction as part of its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC).
  • One of the most important strategies is to increase the share of Indian Railways in freight movement from 35% to 45% by 2020.
  • Railways are setting up Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFC) throughout the country. The first phase of it will be to reduce emissions by 457 million tons of CO2 over a 30-year period.
  • The railways will increase the share of renewable energy in its energy mix.
  • One of the means will be to improve water use efficiency by 20% upto 2030PAT Scheme will be implemented in the railway sector.
  • Static part- Indian Railways has taken up some steps to reduce emissions since 2014 like- the issuance of a water policy in 2017 for effective management, and the creation of an additional carbon sink by afforestation.
