Trees Beyond Forests Initiative

Current Context: The Assam government and the US Agency for International Development (USAID) together launched the Trees Beyond Forests initiative: The “Trees Outside Forests in India (TOFI)” program.
Trees Beyond Forests Initiative
  • The primary objective of the initiative is to bring together farmers, businessmen, and private institutions to increase the trees in the state’s non-traditional forests.
  • This initiative aims to:
  1. enhance agriculture’s climate resilience
  2. support global climate change mitigation and adaptation goals
  3. increase carbon sequestration
  4. aid local populations
  • The goal of the state government of Assam is to increase tree cover outside of traditional forests by 2.8 million hectares.
  • This initiative will enhance India’s attempt towards reaching the target of adding 2.5 to 3 billion tons of carbon sink by 2030.
  • The USA has granted USD 25 million to the 7 states under the TOFI program, namely:
  1. Assam
  2. Odisha
  3. Uttar Pradesh
  4. Andhra Pradesh
  5. Tamil Nadu
  6. Haryana
  7. Rajasthan
