Current Context: The National Statistical Office (NSO), under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MOSPI), released a press note on the Employment Outlook of India from September 2017 to June 2022.

  • The information is based on the number of subscribers under three major schemes:
  1. Employees’ Provident Fund Scheme
  2. Employees’ State Insurance Scheme
  3. National Pension Scheme
  • The Employment Outlook reflects data for six sets of periods:
  1. September 2017 – March 2018
  2. April 2018 – March 2019
  3. April 2019 – March 2020
  4. April 2020 – March 2021
  5. April 2021 – March 2022
  6. April 2022 onwards
  • The data gave gender-based information regarding the number of employees who paid contributions and the number of newly registered employees who are paying contributions.
  • It also gave gender-based information regarding existing subscribers of the NPS and new subscribers contributing to the same.
  • The data further mentioned a jump of 0.4 million in India’s formal sector employment in the October-December quarter of 2021.
  • According to it, a total of 31.4 million workers were employed across nine sectors compared to 31 million in the July-September quarter and 30.8 million in the April-June quarter of 2021.
