Current Context: According to the report by Climate Transparency, India suffered an income loss of 5.4% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2021.
Report by Climate Transparency
  • The loss of 5.4% of GDP suffered by India is the highest among the G20 countries.
  • The report by Climate Transparency emphasized that India witnessed a record heatwave that greatly affected laborers, workers migrants, homeless, and low-income households, and reduced the production of wheat crops.
  • The report also mentioned that though India has a share of 3% in global carbon emissions, its 142 million people, i.e. 10% of its population are exposed to the summer heatwave.
  • It further mentioned how the increase in temperature resulted in the reduction of working hours which in turn led to substantial economic losses.
  • The report went on to state that the G20 nations are still not taking the required level of action with respect to the Paris Agreement.
  • Climate Transparency was co-founded by Peter Eigen and Alvaro UmaƱa in 2014 and is a global partnership of experts from 16 partner organizations of G20 countries with the objective to increase awareness and peer pressure among policy-makers regarding climate change.
