  • National:
    • India declared the country's candidature as a non-permanent member for the next tenure at the UN Security Council for the 2028-29 term.
  • International:
    • Indian-origin Leo Varadkar, former Irish Deputy Prime Minister and leader of the Fine Gael party, has been elected as the new prime minister of Ireland following a vote in the lower house of the Irish parliament.
    • This is the second time that Varadkar has been elected as Irish prime minister. He first became the Irish prime minister in June 2017. In June 2020, the Fine Gael party led by Varadkar formed a coalition government with Fianna Fail and Green Party, in which he served as deputy prime minister and Minister for Enterprise, Trade, and Employment.

  • Important Days:
    • Minority Rights Day which is observed on December 18th every year was celebrated at the National Commission for Minorities on December 16, 2022. The United Nations on December 18, 1992, adopted and broadcast the Statement on the individual's Rights belonging to Religious or Linguistic National or Ethnic Minorities
    • Every year on 18th December, the world marks International Migrants Day, a day set aside to recognize the important contribution of migrants while highlighting the challenges they face.
  • Appointment:
    • Union Minister of Railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw has been appointed as the Chancellor of Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya, Vadodara, by President Smt. Draupadi Murmu. It is noteworthy to mention that Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw will be the first Chancellor of Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya.
  • Reports and Indices:
    • Global Food Security Index (GFSI) report 2022
      • The 2022 Global Food Security Index (GFSI) report was released by the British weekly The Economist. The 11th Global Food Security Index shows a deterioration in the global food environment for the third year, threatening food security.
      • In this report, South Africa overtook Tunisia to become the most food-secure country in Africa.
      • India is ranked in 68th position along with Algeria with an overall score of 58.9. China’s position is 25th with a score of 74.2.
      • India was ranked at 71st position in the Global Food Security (GFS) Index 2021 of 113 countries with an overall score of 57.2 points on the GFS Index 2021.
      • Union Minister for Science and Technology, Jitendra Singh has revealed that India had jumped from 7th to 3rd in global scientific publications and scholarly output, according to a report by America’s National Science Foundation.
  • Science and Technology
    • NASA has launched the first-ever global satellite mission that will observe nearly all water on Earth's surface, measuring the height of water in the planet’s lakes, rivers, reservoirs, and oceans.
  • Sports:
    • The Indian national blind cricket team won its third consecutive T20 World Cup. India clinched a 120-run victory over Bangladesh at Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium.
    • Argentina won their third World Cup in extraordinary style, beating France 4-2 in a penalty shootout after Lionel Messi scored twice in a 3-3 draw that featured a hat-trick for Kylian Mbappe as the holders recovered from 2-0 down after 80 minutes.
    • The Indian women's Hockey team led by Captain Savita Punia beat Spain 1-0 in the final to win the inaugural FIH Nations Cup played at Valencia, Spain. The winning goal was scored by Gurjit Kaur of India.
  • Awards:
    • Sargam Koushal created history as she finally won the Mrs. World 2022 title after 21 years while competing for India in the pageant. The 32-year-old won the competition in Las Vegas after defeating competitors from 63 other nations.
    • Sonakshi Sinha has been awarded PETA India's 2022 Person of the Year title. PETA stands for People for Ethical Treatment of Animals in India. The international animal rights non-profit group endorsed the title and celebrated the actions of the "Dabang" actress for saving animal lives in India.
  • Books:
    • The Light We Carry: Overcoming in Uncertain Times is a nonfiction book written by Michelle Obama and published, by Crown Publishing. The Light We Carry will inspire readers to examine their own lives, identify their sources of gladness, and connect meaningfully in a turbulent world.
  • MOU’s:
    • Steelmaker ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) to provide digital skill training to more than 1,600 young people across the country.
    • To boost cooperation in the field of highway engineering and other infrastructure works, the National Institute of Technology, Manipur, (NIT Manipur) and National Highways Infrastructure Development Corp. Ltd. (NHIDCL), have signed an MoU, with the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways.
  • Government Schemes:
    • The Tamil Nadu government launched the 'Friends of Library' scheme, wherein books will be personally provided to those who are unable to visit state-run libraries. The service of volunteers will be used for this purpose as per the School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, who inaugurated this scheme.
    • Union Minister for Personnel, Public Grievances, and Pensions Dr. Jitendra Singh will inaugurate the Prashasan Gaon ki Ore, a nationwide campaign under the Good Governance Week 2022 in New Delhi. He will also launch the Good Governance Week portal, www.pgportal.gov.in. In the 5 days campaign, over 300 New Services identified by District Collectors across the country will be added for Online Service Delivery.
