Current context: Recently, the Broadcasting Infrastructure and Network Development scheme was introduced to give Prasar Bharati, India's state broadcaster, financial help.
Revamping Prasar Bharti

  • It intends to strengthen the infrastructure of the nation's public broadcasters, including Doordarshan, All India Radio, and others. Prasar Bharati gets a facelift!
  • For the recently announced Broadcasting Infrastructure and Network Development (BIND) Scheme, which has a total outlay of over Rs 2,500 crore, Rs 600 crore has been set aside from the expected Rs 1,100 crore for the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
  • The scheme aims to expand the reach of All India Radio (AIR) to 80% of the Indian population, focusing on border areas, LWE (Left Wing Extremism) areas, and tribal areas.
  • The scheme has an outlay of Rs 2,500 crores and aims to increase the channels available on AIR and improve the quality of the broadcast content.
  • The scheme will also involve the distribution of 80 lakh free set-top boxes of Doordarshan and purchasing of OB vans (Outside Broadcasting vans) to increase the capacity of DTH (direct-to-home) broadcasting.
  • The government aims to spread awareness and promote society-related programs through public service broadcasting. The I&B ministry has released a warning regarding public service broadcasting. Every private satellite station should air socially relevant and vital programmes for at least 30 minutes each day, according to the advice.
