Current context: The Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports (MoYAS), the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), and the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education & Research, Hyderabad (NIPER Hyderabad) have signed a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish the capability of testing nutritional supplements in India.

  • The main objective of this MoU is to combat doping problems in sports and raise awareness of the associated risks of using nutritional supplements.
  • The agreement also aims to increase research opportunities in the anti-doping domain and provide safe and dope-free nutritional supplements for athletes.
  • The MoU was signed in the presence of key officials, and it is part of a commitment to strengthen the field of "Food for Special Dietary Use for Sportspersons."
  • As part of the partnership, tools will be developed to disseminate information generated by the testing laboratory at NIPER Hyderabad to benefit the sports ecosystem and the public in India.
  • The initiative will also promote best practices in supplement marketing and distribution and educate athletes on the harmful components of nutritional supplements that can affect their long-term performance.
  • It's worth noting that in 2022, MoYAS, FSSAI, and the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) signed a tripartite MoU to enhance the testing capacity and research of nutritional supplements in India.
